Join us in April to learn about the current state of climate science and what current climate models project under a business-as-usual scenario, gain insight about the cultural and political aspects of climate science, and explore current debates over policy.

Joellen Russell

Professor Russell joined the faculty in the Department of Geosciences at the University of Arizona in 2006. Her main research is on the role of the Southern Ocean in the global climate and its response to climate change. Since arriving in Tucson, she has expanded her research to include the role of the westerly winds in patterns of drought in the continental US during the last 1000 years, the present and the future; the interactions and feedback between orogeny and orography and regional and global climate; and the circulation of the methane atmosphere on Saturn’s moon Titan with members of the Cassini Mission.

Ms. Russell received her bachelor's degree at Harvard University in Environmental Geoscience before earning her Ph.D at Scripps Institution of Oceanography, UCSD, in Oceanography.

University of Arizona, Institute of the Environment


Ms. Liverman is the co-director of the Institute of the Environment at The University of Arizona and a Regents Professor in the School of Geography and Development. She is also affiliated with Oxford University as a visiting professor of Environmental Policy and Development and senior research fellow in the Environmental Change Institute. Her research focuses on the human and social dimensions of environmental issues including vulnerability and adaptation to climate change, environmental change and food security, climate policy and governance, climate and the arts, and environment and development.
